Portable Film Festival

BY ANDRE SOARES, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, USA (CINEMA MINIMA)

PRESS RELEASE

The Portable Film Festival is excited to announce the launch of its showcase of the extraordinary work of British video maverick, Woof Wan-Bau. Beginning Monday October 27th, www.portablefilmfestival.com will feature five of this London based director’s innovative music videos and short films.

Portable is Australia’s premier online film destination, and presents the Woof Wan-Bau Showcase as part of an ongoing series of curations; a new film is available each day to view online and download to your iPod, PSP, or 3G Mobile phone!

A true enigma of the music video set, Woof Wan-Bau - aka Joji Koyama - first came to prominence in 2004, winning the public choice award at the British Animation Awards for his first music video for Four Tet’s “My Angel Rocks Back and Forth”. Since then, he has garnered a number of prestigious awards including two Gold Lion Awards this year at the Cannes Lions, the Grand Prize for Animation at the Curtas Vila do Conde International Film Festival in 2005, and was featured the New Directors Showcase at Cannes also in 2005.

Included in the Portable Showcase is three of Woof Wan-Bau’s music videos including his award winning offering for Four Tet, also featured is his magical music video for Coldcut’s “Whistle and a Prayer”, and Mogwai’s mesmerizing “Friend of the Night”. Also featured are two of his short films, “From Nose to Mouth” completed in 2006, and the 2004 animated short “Watermelon Love”.

Each of these short films are characterized by an otherworldliness, transporting audiences across the threshold into fantastic and virtual spaces, making the familiar strange and the strange familiar. The works featured are exemplary of Woof Wan-Bau’s eclectic style; Everyday items take on an uncanny quality as in “Friend of the Night”, streetlamps magically ascend into the starry sky as in “My Angel Rocks Back and Forth”; it’s images such as these that impress the senses with the beauty and magic of the everyday. The Woof Wan Bau showcase is not to be missed!
