Press release — From 2008 September 29, Portable Film Festival invites you onboard ROAD MOVIE, our latest showcase release! From the highways to the byways, Portable takes a laterally thinking cinematic trip through the road movie genre, showcasing the best cross-country short film, music video and animation from all over the world!
Searching, seeking revenge, experimenting or simply driven by the pure desire and need for adventure, the distance between a and b has always been a central point of framing story. Across Spain, Brazil, Morocco, America and France, ROAD MOVIE presents the drama of being in transit: we travel classical road movie territory via new technology with Michel and Oliver Gondry’s BEHIND, which travels the breadth of America from one car in under 4 minutes.
We wax retrospective with Sarah Jacobson’s autobiographical escape from college life in ROAD MOVIE (OR WHAT I LEARNED IN A BUICK STATION WAGON), one of American underground cinema’s most enduring talents (sadly cut short by cancer in 2004). We put up with the inane questions of taxi drivers in TAXI?, and take in music video in motion from some of alternative music’s current wunderkinds, BONNIE ‘PRINCE’ BILLY, and THE KNIFE. OTHER CARS stitches an ingenious narrative across the simultaneous conversations of a traffic jam; PASSAGE, direct from the Rotterdam International Film Festival, observes in documentary form a Brazilian man who abandons his home for the mystery of the road. See a radio station play matchmaker for two commuters, join the inept brothers Stanley and Dean as they head west to seek revenge, or enjoy the many other highlights of a program redlining it like Kerouac to Mexico!
A new presentation film will be released onto the home page of the site every day.
